As part of its efforts to restructure the power sector, a new company called Central Gujarat Vij Company Limited was inducted by the Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) on September 15, 2003. The company received the certificate of business on October 15, 2003

Formation of Gujarat Electricity Industry Reorganization and Comprehensive Transfer Scheme, 2003, (Transfer Scheme) under the provisions of the above Act Government with Government notification for transfer of assets / liabilities etc. of the previous GEB of the subsequent GEB.

Similarly, Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) has been reorganized into seven companies with functional responsibilities of trade, generation, transmission and distribution from April 1, 2005.
The companies involved are as follows:

• Gujarat Energy Development Corporation Limited (GUVNL).
• Gujarat State Electricity Corp. Limited (GSECL). 
• Gujarat Gujarat Energy Transmission Corp. Ltd. (GETCO). 
• North Gujarat Vij Company Limited (UGVCL). 
• South Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL).
• Madhya Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Ltd. (MGVCL). 
• Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL).

As part of the reform process, the Gujarat government has unbundled various functions of the GEB. As a result of this unbundling, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) has taken responsibility for power generation. 

Electricity transmission has already been handed over to the existing company - Gatco. The distribution network in the state is divided between four distribution companies, covering the northern, central, southern and western parts respectively.
